(a)   Larger domestic animals shall include, but not be limited to: cattle, horses, sheep, llamas, emus and goats.

(b)   Poultry shall include chickens, ducks, geese or other similar domesticated fowl.

No new larger domestic animal areas can be established within the city limits of St. John.

Larger domestic animals may be stabled within the city limits, providing no more than one animal shall be kept for each 5000 square feet of total fenced area devoted for animal use. However, under no condition will the number of larger domestic animals exceed ten (10) total on any one property. No shelter or stable for horses shall be permitted closer than 50 feet from any occupied residential structure other than on the same tract, or within 50 feet of any lot line in any resident zoning district, subject to zoning regulations. No feeding or watering troughs or tanks shall be located or storage of animal waste material within 50 feet of a property line. Any permanently attached structures already existing will hereby be grandfathered in and exempted from the 50 feet restrictions as stated above.

It shall be unlawful for any person to maintain or harbor larger domesticated animals or poultry in the following described areas in the city: from Kendall on the south to Ninth Avenue on the north and from Prairie Street on the east to West Street on the west.  Citizens currently owning animals  in  this  prohibited  area  will  be  allowed  to continue  to  own  larger domesticated animals.  However, if the property would sell or otherwise change ownership, the new owner would be prohibited from maintaining or harboring larger domesticated animals.

No barbed wire or electric fences will be allowed in the prohibited areas, as defined at 2-404. Citizens in this prohibited area that currently have barbed wire and/or electric fences will have one year from the date of publication to replace said fence.

No bulls or any male breeding stock are allowed in the prohibited area, as defined at 2-404.

The owning of any fowl within the city limits is hereby prohibited, except: (a) caged birds kept as pets within a residential structure; (b) the owning of chickens, geese, or ducks shall be limited to a maximum of five (5) per residence in the prohibited area; and (c) no more than 100 in the remainder of the city. No roosters will be allowed within the city limits.

This code section is in effect after publication in the local newspaper.  Citizens will be given 90 days to comply after the effective date.
